Fahrenheit 451

Author's note: I am reading a book called Fahrenheit 451, and it is about a fireman named Guy Montag. In this piece I will be answering one of the response questions for this book, the question was 'What do you believe the character Beatty represents?' I will be trying to answer the question with good organization and having a clear, unique thesis statment.

In books some people might represent holiness, or purity, but not in  Fahrenheit 451, where since it is a dystopian world . In the book Fahrenheit 451 the character Beatty is the farthest from being either of those symbols. I think he represents something worse. Something that is so bad it's not even on the same scale as those other two symbols. He represents the devil's assistant.

Throughout various parts of the book Beatty will only follows his selfish needs, which is bringing out his Id. He brings it out whenever he burns something because it is being exactly like a caveman, and cavemen would only use their id's in life.He will also have used his id when he sets the robotic dog on Montag, because he uses his animal side, and only a sick person would do that and try to kill Montag. This is a reason because the Devil doesn't use his ego or super ego, he only uses his id.

Another reason is because Beatty breaks four of God's commandments. He kills, he steals, he covets, and he lies. This reason makes him the Devil's assistant because if those are some of the worst ones of the ten commandments which are sacred and holy. So, if he didn't symbolize the devil's assistant he wouldn't usually break more than one of the commandments. He breaks the commandments by killing partially innocent people that own books. He also once coveted to read books and when he did he was not happy so he started to steal other people's book to get revenge and kill them. He lied by saying the he wouldn't turn in Montag for having a book because everyone does at least once…. But he didn't he turned him in.

The final reason is that he tricks all the other firemen to act like him. He teaches them to be evil, and scary, and to break Gods commandments also. He does this by teaching them to act like they are better than everyone else, and to stomp on everyone else so they are scared to death by them. He teaches them to break gods commandments by teaching them to steal other people's books. Then sometimes he has them burn down the house with the person in it if they don't give up there books and leave the house. This represents him being the devil's assistant because  he is influencing people to do bad stuff and maybe even get hurt.

Even though he still does all these bad things he still might love god, just like how Lucifer still loves god and follows him. Sometimes people do bad things, but think its good. That is why God kicked Lucifer out of heaven, he thought humans were evil so he tried to kill them all to protect even though that made Lucifer like them. So that is what Lucifer is trying to have Beatty do, kill the mind of people by not being able to read books and kill there minds without the knowledge of books. That is why Beatty represents the devil's assistant. He was just trying to follow his orders.

  1. I like the way that this piece in particular is marking a turning point for you as both student and person. You are demonstrating a level of growth here that is indicative of a young adult; you are incorporating your own view of the world into the process of analysis. That is excellent. Be sure to embed comments to tell your reader the citation internally. For example, instead of just freely using the term "id", be sure to reference Freud. Instead of assuming the reader is on the same page with the religious comments, take the time to explain in more detail where you are coming from. You can assume the reader read the novel, but do not assume they are familiar with the references you invoke.
